Ralph Vaughan Williams Overture (from “The Wasps”)
Jennifer Higdon blue cathedral
Jean Sibelius Symphony No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 82

Conducted by Maurice Cohn, Clancy Ellis, and Mark Powell

  • The Wasps Overture of Vaughan Williams is a celebration of English rural life, featuring a buzzy opening that sets the stage for a series of contrasting themes, including a lively dance tune, a march and a pastoral melody, reflecting the serene majesty of the English countryside.

Jennifer Higdon’s blue cathedral explores themes of loss, journey and the symbolic nature of cathedrals as doorways between worlds. The work creates the sensation of contemplation and quiet peace, moving towards the feeling of celebration and ecstatic expansion of the soul.

The Fifth Symphony of Jean Sibelius evokes nature’s divine logic, the music flowing like a river calmly and then cascading, with this majestic work drawing on other inspirations from nature that reflected Sibelius’ connection with the Finnish landscape that was integral to his identity.
